INTERIM CONCEPT OF OPERATIONS FOR A TYPE DESIGNATION AUTOMATED SYSTEM October 31, 1997 non-CDRL
This interim "Concept of Operations" (CONOPS) for a Type Designation Automated System (TDAS) provides the project background, as well as a description of the current manual type designation process. The document provides a series of operational scenarios for the automation of the TDAS, and an analysis of the proposed automated TDAS. The document also addresses design and implementation issues such as: legacy data, security, the DLSC Information Hub, integration of the EDA/SQL commercial-off-the shelf (COTS) software product, and database design.

PRELIMINARY CONCEPT OF OPERATIONS FOR A TYPE DESIGNATION AUTOMATED SYSTEM May 1, 1997 non-CDRL
The Defense Logistics Services Center (DLSC) supports defense system procurement via assigning, tracking, and retiring National Stock Numbers (NSN) for all equipment used by the Department of Defense (DoD). Military Service Type Designation organizations such as the U.S. Army's Communication and Electronic Command (CECOM) and the Air Force Material Command (AFMC), assign a nomenclature to each piece of equipment by naming and codifying equipment according to a type designation which specifies the installation, equipment type, and purpose of the item. The request for a NSN assignment to DLSC comes after the type designation has been assigned. DLSC, CECOM, and AFMC need to share some common information such as type designation, drawing number and part number for cataloging, provisioning, supply support, part break-out for second source procurements and other logistics functions. At the time of this initiative the type designation process was a manual activity and type designation data sharing was not timely and contributed to the duplication of acquisition and logistics efforts, inability to find parts in inventories, and duplicate parts in inventories.
This initial concept of operations document describes the current manual type designation process and how an automated system can overcome inefficiencies in this process. Topics in this concept of operations include: requirements, scope, constraints and assumptions, a series of operational scenarios, a summary of advantages and limitation of an automated type designation process, and in initial discussion of implementation issues.

TYPE DESIGNATION AUTOMATED SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR'S GUIDE
The Type Designation Automation System (TDAS) is an automated system that facilitates the assignment and support of type designations in accordance with Military Standard (MIL-STD)-196D (the Joint Electronics Type Designation System). This TDAS is phasing out the manual paper based Military Service Type Designation System (MSTDS) in use at Communications and Electronics Command (CECOM). This document is intended to provide an overview of the newly automated system maintenance issues and a reference guide for administering the software application.
