TASK 5:  Acquisition Program Data Management Life Cycle Support

Military Standard (MIL-STD) 2549, Configuration Management Data Interface Standard, was approved by the Defense Standards Improvement Council (DSIC) and published on 30 June 1997. This document contains the business rules view (conceptual schema) for a DoD standard Automated Information System (AIS) for the Configuration Management (CM) business area. It addresses CM metadata and data. It also includes Data Management (DM), Technical Manuals and other operations oriented documents, and Technical Data Packages (TDPs). Current plans call for expanding the scope of the document to address all remaining acquisition program data (test, management, cost, etc.). Thus the document can serve as the basis for a conceptual schema for a DoD standard AIS for all acquisition program data management lifecycle support.

There is a need to test the use of the data model in MIL-STD-2549 against actual requirements, including those of the DoD developed Configuration Management Information System (CMIS), Joint Engineering Data Management Information and Control System (JEDMICS), and the Joint Continuous Acquisition and Logistics Support (JCALS) Workflow Manager in order to evaluate various products and qualify the best candidates.

To properly introduce MIL-STD-2549 to the DoD components and their industry counterparts will require a range of technical, business, modeling, and testing support.
