TASK 5: Internet MID Demonstration
Final MID Demonstration and Specification Improvement Report (November 1996)
This report is a result of the performance of a task within the Department of Defense (DoD) Continuous Acquisition and Life-cycle Support (CALS) Integrated Data Environment (IDE) project in support to the Office of Secretary of Defense (OSD) CALS Office. The task, titled "MID Demonstration," is related to DoD
Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs) and the U.S. Navy Metafile for Interactive Documents (MID). The task involved a review and assessment of the MID, a comparative analysis of the MID versus other competing and/or emerging approaches, the development of a software system for demonstrating the processing and presentation of MID instances over the Internet using World Wide Web (WWW) retrieval capabilities, and the demonstration of that software system using a MID-encoded IETM view-package. The purpose of this report is to document these activities and provide recommendations for improving the MID.

Final Plan of Actions and Milestones for the Metafile for Interactive Documents Demonstration (October 21, 1996)
This report documents the plan of actions and milestones for conducting a survey review, independent assessment and comparative analysis, and an Internet demonstration of the draft Metafile for Interactive Documents (MID) specification. The survey review will address MID ownership, adoption, and vendor support. The independent assessment and comparative analysis will attempt to identify those aspects of the MID that require improvement. The Internet demonstration will involve both software development and technical manual data selection. Each of these areas is discussed in detail in the sections that follow. Before addressing the actions associated with these issues, the next section will describe the MID, some important issues
associated with it, and how they affect the MID demonstration task.

Internet MID Processing And Retrieval Tool (IMPART) Software User Manual (May 1996)
The purpose of IMPART is to demonstrate the processing and presentation of Metafile for Interactive Document (MID) instances over the Internet. The MID is an application of Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) developed by the U.S. Navy that provides a common and well-specified format into which information from any Electronic Technical Manual (ETM) or Interactive Electronic Technical Manual (IETM) database can be "mapped" for the purpose of interactive presentation to a user.
This software was designed as a prototype demonstration system that will implement those aspects of the MID necessary for demonstrating basic interactive electronic presentation functionality over the Internet.
This software was designed in support of the OSD CALS Office for the DoD CALS Integrated Data Environment Project. Contract Number: DAAB10-94-D-0503-0048.
