    TASK 6: Integrated Data Environment

Preliminary IDE Framework, Implementation Concept, and Rationale Report  (May 1997)

The Continuous Acquisition and Life-cycle Support (CALS) Integrated Data Environment (IDE) framework will be used by Department of Defense (DoD) information technology architects, planners, systems designers, acquisition personnel, infrastructure managers, and program managers to design, develop, and implement an integrated data environment. The technical framework will incorporate the following:

    1. The open systems criteria cited in the "Technical Architecture Framework for Information Management" (TAFIM).
    2. The three-component architectural model laid out in the "CALS Phase 1 Architecture Study."
    3. The Defense Information Infrastructure Master Plan.
    4. The ARPA framework studies.

Additionally, the IDE framework will be consistent with the CALS strategic plan, the CALS implementation plan, and DoD 5000 policies. The IDE must be accessible to authorized Virtual Enterprises formed to develop common systems, products, and services needed by both Government and commercial members of those enterprises.
