  1.   What is the Comment System?

    The Comment System is a web-based application that facilitates remote document collaboration. Users can post comments and suggest changes on a document, and the appropriate points of contact are notified of the comments automatically, via email.


  2.   How does the Comment System differ from other comment systems?

    A brief search of the web noted the following Comment Systems:
    1. DocumentMarkUp Tool, a B-Toolkit Component for X-Windows Motif Application Developers, has a comment/annotation facility that generates LaTeX output (a publishing system ). For more info, see: B Tool-Kit.
    2. Web Course Tool,, a research prototype, web-based client/server course authoring and presentation tool for educators - has a page annotation capability for use by students. (Developed at University of British Columbia) For more info, see: Web-CT.
    3. LEAD Technologies Annotations (Part of Express Toolkit List: $1995 ) is part of a developer's toolkit for programmers. LEADTOOLS Express editions support annotation of images by letting you overlay images with text, lines, shapes, freehand drawings, arrows, buttons, highlights, hot spots, sticky notes, stamps, buttons, and sounds.   3.   What are the minimum requirements to use the Comment System?

    The Comment System is a web-based application. Netscape Navigator version 4.0 (or higher) or Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 (or higher) are required to use the Comment System. If you aren't sure of what browser or version you're using, click here to find out.


  4.   Is a demonstration of the Comment/Annotation Tool available?

    Yes, a Comment/Annotation demonstration is available on the DCN/ICN Demonstration Page.


  5.   What are some of the user features of the Comment/Annotation Tool?

    Some of the end-user features include:

    • Download of documents available for comment
    • Addition of general or specific comments
    • Addition of comments by severity level (essential, suggested, editorial)
    • Addition of comments - free text form
    • Comments using attached files - for extensive revision
    • View comments posted to date
    • Sort comments by key field using up to three fields (comment date, commentor attributes [e.g. name, organization], comment type, comment severity level, resolution date)
    • Hardcopy Printing


  6.   What are some of the administrative features of the Comment/Annotation Tool?

    Some of the administrative features include:

    • Add new documents for review
    • Remove documents from active status (stop accepting comments on a document)
    • Add/remove persons to receive automatic e-mail notification of new comment submissions
    • Add/remove reviewers
    • Accept names and e-mail addresses of potential reviewers
