ACQUISITION LOGISTICS AND OPERATIONAL LOGISTICS

The life cycle of a weapon system begins with the identification of a perceived need, which is then analysed and translated into detailed requirements. Those requirements constitute the input to the design process, which is followed by the production of the prime equipment of the weapon system, together with its associated support equipment. The system is then fielded and, after its useful life, it is phased out (figure 2-1).

Within the life cycle of a weapon system, Acquisition Logistics is the process managed within the specification, definition and production of defence equipment, which concurrently identifies the support elements that will be required during the useful life' of the equipment. The basic elements of the Acquisition Logistics are:

  • Integrated Logistic Support (ILS)
  • Logistic Support Analysis (LSA)
  • LSA Record (LSAR)
  • Initial Provisioning
  • Technical Documentation

Operational Logistics covers those functions which support the equipment through its useful life' (from the utilization process onward to its withdrawal from service). The operational logistics basic functions include:

  • Configuration Management
  • Order Administration
  • Delivery
  • Stock Management
  • Equipment Maintenance
